After Arnold Schwarzenegger's new low-carbon fuel initiative was discovered to be heavily backed by ethanol interests, a new UC Berkeley study claims that as alternative fuels go, ethanol is a cruel joke. According to the Los Angeles Times, UC Berkeley geoengineering professor Tad Patzek claims that the oil and coal used in the production of corn more than make up for the carbon reduction in burning ethanol. "I don't think much of ethanol for energy or anything else," Patzek said. We know, we know - it's not exactly breaking news that ethanol's environmental benefits are greatly overstated. But hey, the guv's backing it, so we guess the point has to be repeated occasionally.
