He was elected way back in June, but Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums still hasn't named his staff after his secret swearing-in last week. However, we hear that one of Dellums' top transition aides, Tony West, will not be on the city payroll. City Hall sources say West, a partner at the prestigious law firm of Morrison & Foerster, didn't want to take a major paycut and go to work for the mayor. That sounds reasonable, but also contradicts everything people were led to believe in recent months.
West figured to be one of Dellums' top aides considering his prominent role in the transition. Just before New Year's, West reportedly attended a sit-down on Dellums' behalf with consultants hired to assess the city's police department. But West was an outsider with a business-friendly background, which may have endeared him to skeptics , but may have made local lefties backing Dellums suspicious. We left West a message and are waiting to hear back from him.
