Oakland Mayor-elect Ron Dellums' victory in June got insiders talking about the re-emergence of a Dellums political machine. Well, the machine is, uh, a little rusty if the result of the Peralta Community College District trustee election is any indication. Dellums and his protégée, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, both endorsed incumbent trustee Alona Clifton for re-election. The megapopular Lee also was heard extolling Clifton's virtues on thousands of robo-calls throughout the district. In the end, though, newcomer Abel Guillen routed Clifton by ten points. The real lesson of the community college election: Don't fuck with the teachers' union, which backed Guillen. Clifton is the second incumbent in the past four years whom the Peralta Federation of Teachers has knocked off (it helped unseat Brenda Knight in 2002).
