Drug War Takes A Shellacking As Congress Okays Several Canna-Bills

The drug war took a one of its biggest shellackings in history this week as the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives voted to cement the federal cease-fire on medical marijuana, and nearly gave up the weed war entirely.

Under the medical marijuana amendment — which has to pass the Senate — the Department of Justice would remain barred from using funds to undermine state medical marijuana laws.

A more far-reaching amendment to protect state-legal recreational cannabis failed in its first-ever floor vote Wednesday, but went down swinging, losing by just sixteen  votes. The bill is certain to resurrect in future sessions.

Dan Riffle, director of federal policies for the Marijuana Policy Project, stated that Wednesday's vote was "the most significant step Congress has ever taken toward ending federal marijuana prohibition [and[ it received an impressive amount of support. It’s not really a question of whether this measure will pass; it’s a question of when it will pass.”

Change Federal Pot Laws By Calling Congress Today, Activists Say

The crazy ideas that started in California in the Sixties are blooming in Washington, DC this week.

Congress is considering several cannabis law reforms this week and activists are asking for their allies to call in to their representatives to assure America’s marijuana majority is heard.

One bill would cement the federal cease-fire on medical marijuana enacted over Christmas. The House approved an extension of the bipartisan cease-fire from Congressmembers Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) and Sam Farr (D-Calif.) by a voice vote Tuesday night, reports Tom Angell, activist and blogger in DC.

HBO has picked up for six episodes the hit cult web TV series “High Maintenance.” Ostensibly about a weed dealer in New York, the three year-old series of comic shorts has some of the best American short storytelling of 2015.

In a new interview for Legalization Nation podcast The Hash, show creators Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld talk cannabis stigma, independent showrunning, the pitfalls of creating as a married couple, and the future of their central character “the guy”.
