Dear Snowboarders: Maybe Shut Up About Where You Toke Up?

by David Downs

The legalization of marijuana has brought to the foreground an interesting juxtaposition: Ski resorts are happy to get you blasted on no-limit, $12 bloody marys at the mid-mountain lodge, but if you smoke a bowl in the trees — well, that’s against federal law and you're a criminal.

by David Downs
Thu, Feb 27, 2014 at 12:03 PM

Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union stated in a news release that the National Labor Relations Board is moving to protect workers’ rights at a medical cannabis dispensary in Maine.

The action underscores the federal government’s schizophrenic policy on weed, as dispensary workers in a number of states are serving federal prison sentences for the same occupations the NLRB is now seeking to protect.

by David Downs

Legal cannabis taxes have begun funding much-needed upgrades to Colorado’s judicial system, according to reports, in some of the first signs of legalization’s effects in the Rocky Mountain State.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday afternoon that the southern Colorado county of Pueblo was the first in the state to quantify tax revenues from the legal sales of weed, which began January 1.

by David Downs
Thu, Feb 20, 2014 at 10:28 AM

Fresh off the news that taxing and regulating pot will almost certainly not happen in California this year, Colorado reports that it will receive about $100 million in expected weed taxes this year. The money will be spent on public schools, and public health like youth drug-use prevention.

‘When Girl Scouts And Medical Cannabis Collide’

by David Downs
Wed, Feb 19, 2014 at 12:37 PM

Intrepid parents of America’s Girl Scouts are boosting their kids’ sales of Thin Mints, Samoas, and more by targeting pot clubs this year.

Families are setting up tables in front of cannabis storefronts, hollering out “cookies!”, and then selling boxes of cookies to marijuana users. (Cannabis is, of course, a powerful appetite stimulant that works directly on nerves in the stomach as well as the brain.)

by David Downs
Tue, Feb 18, 2014 at 11:44 AM

Game over, man.

The frontrunners for California legalization in 2014 will not fund the effort this year, and have punted it to 2016.

The Drug Policy Alliance told the Los Angeles Times in a story published today that there’s not enough time, or voter support to run a legalization initiative in California this year. The deadline to file an estimated 800,000 raw signatures is April 18th.

White House Gives Banks "Red Light" on Servicing Pot Shops

by David Downs
Mon, Feb 17, 2014 at 10:26 AM

On Friday, the federal government released a memo (.pdf), telling banks how they could work with legal marijuana businesses in Colorado, Washington, and elsewhere.

The memo is being billed as a “green light” for banks to work with the legal weed industry, but the text of the memo reads like anything but. The federal government essentially told banks that accepting marijuana cash still breaks federal money-laundering laws, and if banks chose to do so, they should file a bunch of extra reports to the government that would likely constitute self-incrimination.

Narcs Furious Obama Said Pot Is Safer Than Alcohol

by David Downs
Tue, Feb 11, 2014 at 9:54 AM

The head lobbyist for president of California’s drug cops is asking President Obama to take back his recent statement to The New Yorker that marijuana is safer than alcohol.

In a letter sent to President Obama Monday and copied to the press, California Narcotics Officers' Association head lobbyist John Lovell president Steve Riddle never disputes that marijuana is safer than alcohol, but writes that the President’s comments “minimize the dangers of drug use, and by doing so, lessen the impression that drugs are harmful.”
