This week, the U.S. Conference of Mayors — representing 1,309 cities with a population of 30,000 or more — unanimously approved a resolution calling on the United States government to cease its immoral, racially biased, disastrously failed eighty-year war on marijuana.

Well, the Office of National Drug Control Policy — aka the Drug Czar — has responded to the U.S. Conference of Mayors via Twitter thanking them for supporting the Drug War.

Feds, LA Narcs Teaching NorCal Cops How to Raid Dispensaries Today in Dublin

by David Downs
Tue, Jun 25, 2013 at 9:04 AM

Californians legalized cannabis for medical use in 1996, but that doesn't mean California's cops and their federal patrons just decided to respect state law. Quite the opposite; the 18-month-long crackdown on medical cannabis outlets in California has been a joint effort, with local marijuana foes doing most of the work of their Washington, D.C. funders.

Finding loopholes in Prop 215, SB 420, and numerous court cases spelling out medical cannabis patients' rights isn't easy. To that end, the feds and the California Narcotic Officers' Association is in Alameda County today teaching cops how to most effectively harass medical cannabis dispensaries, growers and patients, Legalization Nation has learned.

Video: SB 439 Hearings on Medical Marijuana Regulation

by David Downs
Thu, Jun 20, 2013 at 11:35 AM

Senate Bill 439, which would better protect medical cannabis collectives and cooperatives in California, cleared the Assembly Public Safety Committee Tuesday 5 to 1. The bill's sponsor, Senate Pro Tem Darrel Steinberg, states that it's a step toward regulating medical marijuana statewide.

Right now, medical cannabis patients who follow the rules can still be raided, arrested, prosecuted and imprisoned in anti-MMJ counties like San Diego and Los Angeles. So there's little incentive to follow the rules when they don't protect you. As written, SB 439 would provide legal immunity to collectives, cooperatives and dispensaries who follow the Attorney General's guidelines on medical marijuana.

Time Magazine: The Drug War Is Blocking Cancer, Alzheimer's Treatments

by David Downs
Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 9:04 AM

Kudos to Time magazine for leading the pack of mainstream journalists questioning why politics trumps science in drug policy. Friday, Time's excellent Maia Szalavitz posted that "potential treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and many other illnesses are being blocked by anti-drug laws."

That opinion comes from a new editorial review published in Nature Reviews Neuroscience, wherein lead author David Nutt — chair of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London — and his colleagues argue the drug war is "hindering progress in neuroscience and deterring drug companies from pursuing important leads in major disorders affecting millions of patients."

by David Downs
Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 9:08 AM

Good morning, how about some modern reefer madness from flyover country?
