Listen: New Songs by Legs, Shannon and The Clams, Les Sins, and More

Legs — "Two Colours"

The first single from Legs' LP Pass The Ringo — out on April 23 via San Francisco's Loglady Records — comes with a music video. The Oakland-based quintet ambles through this acoustic jangle, strolling through a jaunty ambiance perfect for a Spring release. If you can't wait until then, check them out at The Knockout on March 24.

Shannon and the Clams — "Rip Van Winkle"

One of Oakland’s resident chimeras of garage, punk, surf, and pop teased us this month with a new track from its first release on Hardly Art, Rats In The Dream House, coming this May. Whether it is Shannon Shaw’s raspy vocal catharsis or Cody Blanchard’s tight arpeggio hooks that keep you listening, this one’s worth a play.

by Whitney Phaneuf
Wed, Jan 16, 2013 at 12:07 PM

San Jose rapper Antwon raps on a new track produced by Bay Area duo Friendzone, which we can assume is responsible for the choppy, chilled-out cloud-rap sound on the track. Antwon is set to release a new album in February on Greedhead Music, his first on any label.

Sunday at Bar 355, Catch Ava Mendoza's Trio Unnatural Ways Before Its European Tour

by Whitney Phaneuf
Fri, Jan 11, 2013 at 12:01 PM

Why do local musicians, especially ones who play avant-garde and free jazz, love Bar 355? To quote Oakland guitarist Ava Mendoza: "They're okay with us being really loud."

When the music is as unbridled as the kind Mendoza and her trio Unnatural Ways create, the louder the better. Unlike Mendoza's blues-meets-noise solo work, her trio — Nick Tamburro on drums and Dominique Leone on synths — lightens the mood. "Unnatural Ways is a party band for weird people," Mendoza said. It's weird for sure, in a thrashy, psychedelic, Captain Beefheart kinda way.
