With three kids in our family, cantaloupe was an inexpensive way to feed us fresh fruit — and naturally we complained about being forced to eat it all the time. These days, it's one of my favorite melons, especially since I learned how to pick out a good one. Here are my tips: Look for a light beige-skinned cantaloupe (some say "gold") and avoid the green ones. Find the "blossom end," which is opposite of the end where the cantaloupe was picked from its stem, and press it with your thumb. It should yield a bit to the touch. Lastly, smell it. It should smell sweet, but if it's overpowering, it's overripe. — W.P.
