Bob McDonald, who the Express featured back in 2011 in a cover story about lesbian and gay seniors who face discrimination in long-term care facilities, passed away January 16 at age eighty.
After graduating from UC Berkeley, McDonald spent his career working in museums, including the Berkeley Art Museum, the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Art Museum of Santa Cruz, according to his obituary. He also wrote about art for the LA Times, Artweek, and The San Diego Union.
McDonald, a longtime champion of gay rights, became the subject of our story on lesbian and gay seniors due to the pressure he felt to go back in the closet when he moved into his Berkeley nursing home. A volunteer from Lavender Seniors of the East Bay helped McDonald combat the isolation and loneliness that many LGBT seniors experience.
