The Underground warehouse space and music co-operative Rec Center Studios (1701 Martin Luther King Jr Way, Oakland) is getting evicted. Its final party will be tonight, Friday, November 2.
Venue to the long-running Sick, Sad World parties, Rec Center hosted hip-hop, indie, and DJ acts that included Kool A.D. (aka Victor Vasquez of Das Racist), Antwon, and Main Attrakionz. The venue's final party will feature female-led, Australian electro bands plus DJs.
Founder Lucas Noah tells us it was a few assholes who ruined it for everyone, with the landlord citing his reason for eviction as the constant tagging that covered the exterior of the building after each party. The interior of Rec Center Studios had murals and graffiti, mostly commissioned by its founders.
Noah said Rec Center started in 2010 as a recording studio for local artists, but grew into a venue for friends and friends-of-friends. Demand for the space increased as did its all-ages crowd, which swelled to 500 at its height. Rec Center was named Best Art Murmur After Party by the Express in this year's Best of the East Bay issue.
The DJ crew behind Sick, Sad World, Trill Team 6,
plans to move the party to Abco Artspace (3135 Filbert St., Oakland).
UPDATE, NOV. 4, 2012:
Correction: An earlier version of this blog post incorrectly said that Sick, Sad World would be moving to Abco. The organizers have not yet located a permanent venue for the party.
@whitney_writer thanks, no permanent place yet but we're working on it
