Rock The Bells Celebrates ’93 Til Infinity

Those who worship at the altar of turntables and microphones often argue over the bookends of hip-hop’s “Golden Era.” This is generally seen as some date in the late ’80s to some date in the early ‘90s — but whichever years you highlight, they have to include 1993.

Rock the Bells thundered into Shoreline Amphitheatre this past weekend, and featured, in full, three of 1993’s greatest records: Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle, Wu-Tang Clan’s Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), and A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauders.

Rest in Peace, Abbey Lincoln

Jazz singer Abbey Lincoln died Saturday in Manhattan, according to the New York Times. A fervent civil rights advocate, she was the wife of acclaimed drummer Max Roach and a co-star in such films as The Girl Can't Help It (1956) and For Love of Ivy (1968). Her discography includes more than 22 albums, among them the 1960 classic We Insist! — Freedom Now, with Max Roach. Here they are performing Roach's Freedom Now Suite

On Land Festival Lineup Announced

The second annual On Land Festival celebrating underground music has announced its lineup. Held September 2-5 at Cafe du Nord and the Swedish American Hall, the festival curated by label Root Strata will feature performances by Grouper, Barn Owl, The Alps, Starving Weirdos, Charalambide, Oneohtrix Point Never, Zelienople, and Le Révélateur (Godspeed You Black Emperor, Fly Pan Am), among others. Local filmmaker Paul Clipson will collaborate with performers to create projections of live Super 8 films. $10-$20; $45 for a four-day pass. Apparently last year's shows sold out in advance, so folks are advised to get their tickets early.
