"You know I'm gonna ride this thing till the wheels fall off," says Richmond blues vocalist Tia Carroll, recently anointed Blues Vocalist of the Year by the Bay Area Blues Society West Coast Hall of Fame. And when the wheels fall off, she'll keep pedaling. No stranger to guerrilla marketing tactics, Carroll christened her old-timey, Memphis-style blues band Tia Carroll & Hard Work because, well, shoot, she says, "It's hard work to book a band, keep them together, expect them to keep up with my music." But Carroll doesn't suffer for lack of a work ethic or endurance, and she evidently lives by the motto that if it's hard, let it be hard. Carroll, whose new album Soul Survivor hits stores March 31, performs Saturday at Kimball's Carnival in Oakland. Rumor has it she may bust out with a gritty version of Etta James' "At Last." Video after the jump.
