Woods

When: Tue., Oct. 16, 9 p.m. 2012

In a sea of psych-rock bands that sound alike, Brooklyn's Woods stands out. There is some of what you'd expect: warm folk harmonies, jangly guitars, and wall-of-sound sonic builds; but there's also Jeremy Earl's distinct, falsetto voice; unusual arrangements; and subtle, lo-fi noise. Now on tour in support of its recently released fifth album, Bend Beyond, Woods has amassed a solid collection of three-minute pop songs and long dramatic jams. But its music gels best live, when the band fully unravels yet remains tight and accessible. Many psych-rock bands can come off as self-indulgent when they try to do the same thing, but in Woods' case, there's always a sense of purpose; even in the band's most spontaneous and spun-out moment, it knows when to reel it back in. Woods performs at The New Parish (579 18th St. Oakland) on Tuesday, Oct. 16. 9 p.m., $12, $15. TheNewParish.com
