The Newcomers

When: Fri., Feb. 8, 9 p.m. 2013

Despite its name, Newcomers is not a new band. The three members (who are still in high school!) formed the Berkeley band two years ago, though they've made music together since the fourth grade. Newcomers' self-proclaimed "slowcore electro rock soul" sound draws from heritage R&B (Lauryn Hill, The Roots, Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu) and more modern artists (Clams Casino, The xx, Lil B). There's a slight roughness to the band's production and occasionally misplaced maximalist touches that signal the group's youth. But still, tracks like "Blurry" and "Home" betray an impressive understanding of how to craft simple yet catchy R&B-inspired songs. Lead vocalist Dante Ryan boasts a particularly impressive voice with a subtle richness that could surely pull off a solid Frank Ocean cover, while lead guitarist David Marcus exudes instinct and confidence that belie his youth. Keyboardist and jazz fiend Jackson Kinder is the self-described "resident maestro" of the group, having composed and produced its songs. Newcomers shows off its chops at Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) with Jayde Lin and Nekhi Foster on Friday, Feb. 8. 9 p.m., $13. SlimsPresents.com
