The Hedgehog

Rated NR 100 minutes 2009

We’re herded, rather than charmed, into sympathy for the three lonely main characters of this French “heartwarmer”: an unloved eleven-year-old girl (Garance Le Guillermic), the grumpy concierge of the building (Josiane Balasko), and the new tenant, a gentle widower from Japan (Togo Igawa). The coyness clots in this self-congratulatory drama, adapted from Muriel Barbery’s novel by writer-director Mona Achache. It’s dishonest and cynical, a particularly gross case of exploitation disguised as a touchy-feely candy-bar feast of emotion. Beware. (98 min.)
