The Family

Rated R 111 minutes 2013

American ex-mafioso Robert De Niro finds himself and his family relocated to a small town in Normandy in the witness protection program, and of course he, his wife (Michelle Pfeiffer), and their teenage kids (Dianna Agron, John D’Leo) leave a trail of corruption and bodily harm in everything they do. We laugh the first time, but less with each repetition. Up until the final ten minutes it’s a predictable, lightweight comic bloodbath; after that it’s just a bloodbath. Writer-director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) can do much better than this. Also with Tommy Lee Jones (111 min.).
