The Call

Rated R 96 minutes 2013

Taut, exciting thriller follows LAPD 911 operator Jordan Turner (Halle Berry), who turns detective when a teenager (Abigail Breslin) is kidnapped by a serial killer (Michael Eklund). Director Brad Anderson (Transsiberian, Vanishing on 7th Street) keeps a tight lid on the chase, and even when Richard D’Ovidio’s screenplay — adapted from a story he wrote with Nicole D’Ovidio and Jon Bokenkamp — ends up in The Silence of the Lambs turf the suspense never lets up. All three main characters turn in blue-chip acting jobs, with apt support by Michael Imperioli as a Good Samaritan. (96 min.)
