.Spices and Staples of Ethiopian Cooking

Oaktown Spice Shop.

The East Bay is known for its wealth of excellent Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurants, but if you didn’t grow up in a household where berbere and niter kibbeh were pantry staples, you probably find the idea of actually cooking an Ethiopian meal at home pretty daunting. No worries; Oaktown Spice Shop (546 Grand Ave., Oakland) has you covered. At this hands-on workshop, Eji Atlaw — owner of Eji’s Ethiopian Kitchen — will teach participants how to make a traditional berbere spice blend, berbere paste, and kinche (a bulgur-based breakfast porridge). All of the recipes will be vegan-friendly. Tickets are available via Eventbrite.com.
