Soundgarden

When: Tue., Feb. 12, 8 p.m. and Wed., Feb. 13 2013

King Animal may not be the most exciting Soundgarden reunion album you could have hoped for, but there's no doubt that the Seattle outfit is still a great band. That's evident in "Non-State Actor" and "By Crooked Steps," tracks that highlight the inventive riffing of guitarist Kim Thayil, the tricky timing of drummer Matt Cameron, the solidness of bassist Ben Shepherd, and the still-powerful set of pipes on singer Chris Cornell. Reunited, they don't sound like they haven't played together for more than a dozen years, making their return somewhat remarkable, if perhaps a bit predictable. In any case, the real reason to check out the band's first proper tour since its late-Nineties demise is to hear the hits: Reviews so far have revealed that the band is playing early songs like "Hunted Down," "Ugly Truth," and "Jesus Christ Pose," and are closing with "Beyond the Wheel." Can Cornell still hit the high notes? Find out at The Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 12-13. 8 p.m., sold out but check Craigslist. TheFoxOakland.com
