Solange

When: Tue., Feb. 5, 8 p.m. 2013

To quote a younger friend who grew up with Destiny’s Child as the ultimate girl group: “If you told me back then we’d all be clamoring to see a Solange show, I wouldn’t have believed you.” That led us down a “whatever happened to Jamie Lynn Spears?” path, but unlike Britney Spears’ lil’ sis, Solange is making her way out of Beyoncé’s shadow. No one was shocked when Solange’s Tuesday, Feb. 5 show at The Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco) quickly sold out — her EP True deservedly earned the praise of critics and fans when it came out late last year. Single “Losing You” offers a funky, sexy respite from sappy, silly pop songs, and yet still appeals to a wide audience. Solange has carved out her edgy dance sound with the help of producer “Dev” Hynes, who has worked with acts like Florence and the Machine, The Chemical Brothers, and Basement Jaxx. Solange and Hynes are wrapping up her new full-length album, due in the first half of 2013, so check Craigslist if you want to see her before she’s as big as her big sister. 8 p.m., sold out.
