Saint Misbehavin': The Wavy Gravy Movie

Rated NR 2009

Berkeley’s own Wavy Gravy tells his story, from his days as a Greenwich Village comic, through emceeing the Woodstock festival, to his present-day role as a sort of secular humanist holy man/clown whose credo takes the form of a ditty: “Wouldn’t it be neat if the people that you meet/Had shoes upon their feet and something to eat?/And wouldn’t it be fine if all humankind had shelter?” Filmmaker Michelle Esrick follows Wavy on his circuitous route, with testimony from such admirers as Jackson Browne, Odetta, and Buffy Sainte-Marie, and plenty of archival reminiscences. More than just a hippie feel-good movie. D.A. Pennebaker serves as executive producer of this lovely film. (87 min.)
