.Rudy’s Can’t Fail Set to Open in Oakland Next Month

Plus, a popular burger chain comes to the East Bay.

With its kitschy-hip décor, punk street cred — Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt is a co-owner, and the restaurant’s name is a reference to a Clash song — and its cheap, filling diner food, Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe is one of Emeryville’s most popular restaurants. No surprise, then, that when news of an Oakland outpost began spreading late last year, the buzz was deafening. Good news on that front: General Manager Tracy Reinstein reports that construction is on track in the new space — at the corner of 18th Street and Telegraph Avenue, in the same building as the Fox Theater — and that the restaurant is now set to open in mid-May. “Things are looking fantastic,” Reinstein said. “It’s going gangbusters, and it’s a lot of fun.” She said that the new restaurant will seat 120 and have a full bar as well as a private dining room with a separate entrance into the Fox. Like the original, it’ll offer cheap, classic American food and be open from 7 a.m.-1 a.m. seven days a week, which makes it the latest addition to Uptown’s burgeoning late-night dining scene.

Five Guys, the insanely popular East Coast analogue to In-N-Out, is opening three East Bay locations as part of an expansion into Northern California. The chain, an upscale fast-food franchise based in Virginia and famed for its French fries, has new locations in Fremont’s Pacific Commons shopping center, in Dublin’s Hacienda Crossing shopping center, and in Pleasant Hill at 100 Crescent Drive.

He’ll be succeeded by Shane McAnelly. … The lasagna at Oakland’s Dopo made the Grub Street blog’s list of the nation’s 101 “most delicious noodle dishes.” … And, finally, Jack London Square’s Kincaid’s fell victim to a fire during last Thursday’s dinner service.
