Room 237

Rated NR 102 minutes 2012

Rodney Ascher’s movie-movie documentary about hidden meanings in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is a hoot, especially when his experts begin hyperventilating about patterns in the Overlook Hotel’s carpet or recondite Holocaust subtexts. Who cares if they’re crazy? But the fun wears off before the film ends. Our personal favorite: an image of Kubrick’s face airbrushed into a cloud formation in the sky. Ascher’s doc does achieve one important goal, though — it makes us want to dig into that 1980 horror flick again, if only to dig Lloyd the bartender. Otherwise, take it with a grain of salt.
