Oz the Great and Powerful 3D

Rated PG 130 minutes 2013

The wildly picturesque CGI settings and fantasy creatures are the real stars of Sam Raimi’s charming prequel to The Wizard of Oz, but James Franco matches up well with them in the title role as Oscar Z. Diggs, a Kansas circus charlatan swept away to the Emerald City by the familiar cyclone. Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis are also well cast as the sisterly wicked witches, with Michelle Williams appropriately wholesome as the kindly good witch. Maybe best of all is the depiction of Oz as a peaceful, multicultural democracy where no one kills anyone else. At last, 74 years later, a children’s fantasy (grownups will find a lot to ogle, too) that’s enthralling enough to share a double feature bill with Victor Fleming’s 1939 original. This humanistic vision is adapted from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire, and directed deftly by Raimi, of Spider-Man and Evil Dead fame.
