There is a certain aesthetic associated with digital production: shiny, pixelated, impersonal, and seamless. New Media Combinations, now on view at the Berkeley Art Center, presents explorations in the intersection of traditional techniques and contemporary technologies, proving that digitally manipulated works can be as intimate and distinctive as those of classic media. Among the pieces is an untitled sculpture by Rebeca Bollinger that resembles the materialization of a digital relic: a ceramic surface resembling a piece of broken concrete is coated with an abstract digital collage of various textures and shapes taken from her own photography. If the Internet were to shatter one day, this piece would be a physical metaphor for what one might find in the rubble. Meanwhile, Kim Anno inkjet prints landscape photos onto aluminum, and paints over them with broad strokes of oil paint, disrupting their idyllic sheen. Also including works by such established Bay Area artists as Bella Feldman, Rupert García, Don and Era Farnsworth, Lia Cook, Talia Greene, Jeannie O’Connor, and Elizabeth Sher, the collection offers an experience of digital work that is captivatingly tactile.
