BioFuel Oasis

Doing one thing well is good. Doing a bunch of things well is great. Doing them as a women-/worker-owned cooperative is remarkable. And doing them with a steadfast loyalty to sustainability, localism, and community is, well, pretty Berkeley. BioFuel Oasis doesn’t just sell biofuel for $4.79 a gallon. That’s how it started back in 2003, but today the operation has expanded to include an urban farm and homesteading store offering such necessities as chicken feed, straw bales, baby chicks, beekeeping supplies, composting worms and casings, fertilizers, and mason jars for canning. And in case you don’t know what to do with such things, BioFuel Oasis also offers a wide variety of low-cost classes. Among them: Fermentation 101, Backyard Beekeeping, and Urban Goats 101, taught by Novella Carpenter, Oakland’s patron saint of urban farming. The deeper you dig, the more you find.
