In the future, when polluted, overpopulated Earth is inhabited by the lower classes, and the elite have fled to the clean and luxurious title space station, a rebellious factory worker (Matt Damon) gets on a collision course with the chief of Elysium security (Jodie Foster) and her brutal underlings, and gooey violence develops. It’s written and directed by South African international sci-fi sensation Neill Blomkamp (District 9), so it’s never boring. And it plays with a few interesting ideas before it devolves into a routine beat-em-up/blow-em-up. But one or two questions remain, such as: Whose idea was it to give the Foster character that silly accent? Rousing support hamming by Sharlto Copley, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura, and William Fichtner. Also with Alice Braga, miscast as a pathetic mother (102 min.).
