For a place that prides itself on serving “seasonal and local comfort food” — all those of-the-moment buzzwords, with gluten-free pizza to boot — Berkeley’s Divino is refreshingly devoid of self-importance. Executive chef Joan Gallagher serves unfussy Italian fare in a warm and welcoming setting. As a general rule of thumb, the simplest menu items tend to be best. Highlights include the fresh pastas, the suppli (fried risotto balls), and the house-made Italian sodas. The pastas and pizzas all come in both regular and gluten-free versions, and many dishes can be prepared vegan upon request. The Sunday brunch menu, meanwhile, is more classic American than Italian. Oh, and there’s this: Divino might just be the kid-friendliest nice restaurant in Berkeley.
