Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay

Rated NR 88 minutes 2012

Ricky Jay, master magician and card sharper extraordinaire, lifts his veil of secrecy ever so slightly to introduce us to his world, and it’s fascinating. Molly Bernstein and Alan Edelstein’s documentary biography of the trickster is chock full of magic feats and lore, with appearances by such admirers and collaborators as David Mamet, Dick Cavett, and Steve Martin. Jay is a natural born carny, and you’d never, ever want to get into a card game with him, but he’s the perfect hustler, irresistible to watch and listen to. The Ice Cube trick alone is worth the ticket price. Step right up. (88 min.)
