Brad Newsham is running for Congress against Barbara Lee. The Oakland cabdriver and travel writer - whose books include All the Right Places and Take Me With You - admits that he agrees with Lee on every single position "of which I am aware, except for one: the urgency of the matter of impeaching Cheney and Bush."
"I have, very sadly and very gradually, come to the conclusion that Representative Lee is not actually in favor of impeachment," Newsham declares in a letter to potential supporters. "I believe she has succumbed to the impeachment-is-off-the-table' dictate of Nancy Pelosi. If I am elected to replace Representative Lee, I will be impeachment-focused and impeachment-committed. I am convinced that impeachment is the right path!"
His campaign slogan is "Tired of the old sham? Write in Newsham!"
Does he think he can win? "Not really." But "I feel like I have won already just by running. For months I've been sickened by the prospect of going to the polls without the option of voting for a pro-impeachment candidate. But now I have created that option for myself - and for you, too. ... I would love your vote, please. My target is 1,000 votes" in the June 3 Democratic primary election. "I'll be happy no matter what happens. (I can count on one vote: my own.)"—Anneli Rufus
