Bay Bridge Bike Path

On September 3, 2013, the eastern span of the Bay Bridge opened to pedestrians and cyclists for the first time in history. Although the bike path on the new bridge dead-ends before Yerba Buena Island, it’s an incredibly beautiful ride that gives cyclists an opportunity to ride parallel to the old Bay Bridge — a unique view that will gradually disappear as demolition continues to move forward over the next year. In addition to providing an unbeatable Instagram backdrop, the journey from Oakland to the bike path is also a colorful and fun one. Cyclists can access the trail from Shellmound Street in Emeryville (near the IKEA), but the trip through West Oakland is much more interesting. Head west on 7th Street past the West Oakland BART Station, under Interstate 880, and through a tunnel with some awesome graffiti waiting on the other side. From there, ride north on Maritime Street through an industrial area — an eerily quiet one, especially on weekends — until reaching the bridge bike path at Burma Road.
