The Downtown Berkeley YMCA swim program not only has young, energetic instructors whom your kids will love, but it also has great facilities. The Y has three swimming pools, all of them indoor, and each is geared to your child's age and skill level. The warm shallow pool, which is heated to about 92 degrees, is perfect for introducing toddlers as young as eighteen months to swimming — with the help of their parents. Kids aged three to five also take group lessons in the shallow pool — without parents — until they're ready to move up to Grace's Pool, which is also kept at a warmer temperature than most pools. Finally, when kids get good enough, they take lessons in the adult lap pool. The Y is also less expensive than many other programs in the East Bay. Eight-week sessions cost $67-$70 for members and each lesson is thirty to sixty minutes long, depending on skill level. The Y also offers financial aid. The program, however, is extremely popular, so don't procrastinate: Check out the signup dates online and then sign your kid up on the first date possible.
