.Best Reason to Remember Hyphy

Mistah F.A.B.

Hyperactive, life-celebrating hyphy rap music simmered in the East Bay since the early Nineties, when rappers like Keak Da Sneak put a name to the party culture engendered by Oakland. The combination of rap with the hit drug of the time, Ecstacy, produced a speedy, narcotic genre with waves of bass designed to go all night and be played loudly while cruising. Yet three years after hyphy failed to enthrall all of mankind and reformat rap, Oakland’s Mistah F.A.B. is still the shiz. He repped the Bay hard at Austin’s South By Southwest in March, and this year released Prince of the Coast (Town Thizzness) and mixtape “The Realest Shit I Never Wrote Part 3 (Hosted by DJ Ill Will & DJ Rockstar),” plus made numerous guest appearances. Hyphy may be greeted with a snort by many rap aesthetes, but sideshow culture persists across the Bay. Hats off to the Prince.
