It’s a beautiful Sunday morning and you’ve got a coffee in one hand and a book in the other — where to go? The East Bay is full of parks, but when you’re looking for a place to read, the Berkeley Rose Garden is the perfect spot. The garden itself has beautiful scenery (the roses, obviously), but you can also see the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge on a clear day, so you’ve always got a view when you want a break from your reading material. The flowers are in peak form in mid-May, but even when the rosebushes aren’t blooming, the greenery is still lovely. The garden is not exactly hidden, but it is tucked away in the Berkeley hills, and thus there’s limited street noise to distract you. There’s also plenty of seating, with benches both in the sun and the shade, and the park maintains a generally quiet atmosphere, save for the occasional wayward child. There’s really no better place to sit and savor your favorite tome (or your copy of the Express).
