San Leandro Optimist Rifle and Pistol Range

Many of us here in the East Bay believe that guns are bad, just on principle. But damn, it’s fun to fire one off every once in a while. Next time the urge hits, check out San Leandro Optimist Rifle and Pistol Range, an indoor/outdoor facility open to the public as well as to law enforcement. It’s been around since 1948, and the San Leandro Optimist Club runs it. For just $13, clients can use one of fourteen indoor lanes; twelve outdoor, fifty-yard lanes; or six outdoor 100-yard lanes for as long as they want. The only drawback for the as-yet uninitiated is that, although the optimists at SLORPR will sell you ammo and rent you safety glasses, you have to provide the Beretta. And for the kids, the Range offers a marksmanship program in which youth ages ten to twenty can learn to handle and shoot .22-caliber rifles.
