In August of 2010, Emeryville resident Rob Arias was robbed at gunpoint while walking his dog a few blocks away from his Park Avenue home. He wanted to alert as many residents as possible, but realized there was no good platform through which to reach his neighbors. That frustrating situation inspired him to create the E’ville Eye, an online forum dedicated to Emeryville, the often-overlooked East Bay city. Since then, he has recruited a number of semi-regular contributors and guest bloggers, and built a loyal audience for his website and associated Facebook page. The E’ville Eye has everything a local blog should — crime updates and statistics, the skinny on restaurant and business openings and closures, interviews with city councilmembers and other government officials, and more. Arias aggregates mainstream news reports relevant to Emeryville and fills in the gaps by covering the local news stories that the rest of the East Bay media outlets — which tend to remain focused on Oakland and Berkeley — often ignore. And every once in a while, Arias snags an exclusive.
