Finding a decent coffee shop in Oakland that’s open late — especially one with Wi-Fi — can be surprisingly difficult. But if you want to bang away at your laptop late into the evening, and require caffeine to fuel your work, Gaylord’s Caffe Espresso is the best option in town. The Piedmont Avenue shop is a great, cozy alternative to the very nearby — and often quite crowded — Starbucks and Peet’s outlets, and even though the area is saturated with high-quality cafes, Gaylord’s deserves recognition for keeping its doors open until midnight seven days a week. Gaylord’s charges a dollar for Wi-Fi access, which can be frustrating, but seems to help ensure that the place doesn’t become too jam-packed with laptops. Plus, the Mexican mochas are astounding, and the latte foam designs — elephants, deer, and bears, oh my — and art on the walls remind customers that they are definitely not patronizing a chain coffeehouse.
