Compared to other major metro areas, the Bay Area has a relative
paucity of good late-night hangouts. But you can step into the
no-frills, exposed-brick interior of Au Coquelet up until 1:30 a.m. and
expect good food, strong coffee, and classic Berkeley people-watching.
There simply aren't enough places where you can saunter in at nearly
any hour of the day and pick at a giant piece of decadent chocolate
cake and sip a cappuccino or Italian soda, and know that you won't be
rushed out or bothered for hours. Despite having no wi-fi, Au Coquelet
is a comfortable and cozy spot if you want to avoid the bars. While the
food may not be among the Bay Area's finest, a huge plate of nachos
with a side of onion rings served by a charming dreadlocked waitress is
just about perfect after a long night of boozing or in the middle of a
long night of studying.
