Dick Collins Firetrails 50

The East Bay offers more recreational racing opportunities than you can shake a Clif Bar at, covering seemingly every discipline from swimming to biking to hopping on one leg (if it doesn’t, it ought to) and every distance from a single mile to 200 (a double-century, in bicycling terms). Riding 200 miles is no cakewalk, but neither is running 31 — especially along the undulating spine of the East Bay hills. To those for whom a marathon just isn’t enough, 31 miles (or fifty kilometers) is 4.8 miles longer than a standard marathon, and happens to be the length of two footraces that take place every year in the East Bay hills between Hayward and Oakland (Skyline 50K) and Fremont and Livermore (Ohlone 50K). However, when 31 miles isn’t enough, there’s a third East Bay ultra-marathon that takes the prize. The Dick Collins Firetrails 50 covers fifty miles, primarily along the East Bay Skyline National Trail, from Lake Chabot to Tilden Park and back. It encompasses 7,800 feet of elevation gain and only three miles of pavement. It that’s still not enough for you, well, good luck.
