.Best DJ Night

If you had to create a hagiography of East Bay DJs, it would certainly include Digital Underground emeritus DJ Fuze — who was once a veritable titan of the hip-hop scene, but ultimately reinvented himself as a world music connoisseur — and it would also have to footnote the members of Local 1200, a crew that sounds, indeed, like a labor union, but refers in this case to the sextet that once rocked shows at La Peña Cultural Center, and eventually gave rise to local R&B diva Goapele. (Her brother, Namane Mohlabane, was a founding member.) And you’d be remiss not to mention two of the kingpins of Local 1200, Willie Maze and Sake-1, who both managed to attain real staying power in hip-hop. It turns out they all convene in downtown Oakland every Thursday for a night of soul, turf, house, and world music hits, with a distinctively internationalist sensibility. The event also features Filipino fusion cuisine by Needa Bee, and it’s held at one of Oakland’s most stylish venues.
