.Best Cajun Cuisine (Not for the Timid)

OB's Cafe

The owner of OB’s Cafe in Old Oakland is a notorious crank. He opens and closes when he feels like it, kicks customers out for minor infractions (like asking for menus or a glass of water), and generally conveys an air of menace from the moment you set foot inside. But tough it out, and you’ll be rewarded with some of the finest Cajun cuisine in the Bay Area. Owner/chef/sole employee Javonito De La Cruz De Morfulleda (aka OB) spends copious amounts of time laboring over each dish, ultimately teasing out intense and surprising flavor profiles. The results bear the mark of his personalized care, like the crave-inducing shrimp and grits and the fiery jambalaya, and are more than worth any grief you may suffer. Plus, anyone willing to play by OB’s rules might find a clichéd heart of gold hiding under that gruff exterior. Oh, but word to the wise: Don’t ask for takeout.
