Oakland Stay Mural

Oakland is awash in street art that brightens up blighted blocks and attracts interest from passersby. But the new Oakland Stay Mural in Jack London Square has reached a wider audience than the pedestrians who cross 3rd and Washington Streets. The mural — done by the TDK Collective, a group of Oakland aerosol artists — is a simple but effective plea to keep the A’s in Oakland. Completed last winter, the mural features the word “STAY” in giant bubble letters, with a young fan on one side and Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson on the other side. Word of the mural spread far enough that Henderson himself reportedly drove by to catch a glimpse. The project is the second in the group’s “Oakland is…” series, which celebrates the East Bay through public art. In addition to paying homage to Oakland’s baseball team, the mural brings much-needed color to an otherwise dreary street and drab building façade.
