.Best Arm Since Roberto Clemente

Yoenis Céspedes

During a 24-hour-stretch last month, Oakland A’s left fielder Yoenis Céspedes sent a very loud message to the rest of Major League Baseball: Go ahead, just try to run on La Potencia. In that span, two Los Angeles Angels players tested Céspedes’ cannon of an arm and paid the price. First, it was Howie Kendrick, who tried to score when Céspedes bobbled a ball in the left field corner. Céspedes then uncorked a mind-blowing, three-hundred-foot-on-the-fly heave to nail Kendrick at the plate. Then the next day, he did it again. This time, Albert Pujols went for third base on another ball that Céspedes had initially misplayed. But then La Potencia grabbed the errant ball with his bare hand and whipped a perfect 250-foot bullet that made Pujols look silly. Céspedes, of course, has been wowing A’s fans for some time with his freakishly strong and accurate arm. But these jaw-dropping, instant-GIF-making, back-to-back throws on June 11 and 12 made the rest of the baseball world sit up and take notice — and perhaps remember the man with the greatest arm ever, the late Roberto Clemente.
