Amy Wilentz

When: Thu., Jan. 24, 7:30 p.m. 2013

Award-winning journalist and frequent New York Times contributor Amy Wilentz has been passionate about Haiti since first visiting the country in 1986 as a reporter. In Farewell, Fred Voodoo: A Letter from Haiti, Wilentz chronicles the half-island nation's trials and tribulations, such as the devastating 2010 earthquake and the effects of the international relief aid that poured into the country in the aftermath. She gets to the heart of voodoo ceremonies and African influences, and dismantles the often negative clich├ęs that surround Haitians. Ultimately, Wilentz paints a portrait of an ever-evolving country, whose citizens face the most challenging circumstances with courage and resilience, and which outsiders never want to leave. On Thursday, Jan. 24, at Berkeley Hillside Club (2286 Cedar St., Berkeley). 7:30 p.m., $7-$15. 510-848 3227 or HillsideClub.org
