Nick Miller, Editor-in-Chief
Alameda
Nick has worked at alternative newsweeklies for more than a decade. He's currently editor-in-chief at the Express. Previously, he served as co-editor (overseeing features, news and investigations) at the Sacramento News & Review. In July 2015, former NBA star and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson sued his paper to prevent access to “secret" emails. Miller oversaw SN&R’s legal battle against K.J. and, in 2016, the Northern California Society of Professional Journalists recognized him and SN&R staff with its James Madison Freedom of Information Award. In 2016, he also won the California Newspaper Publishers Association's "General Excellence" award for best weekly paper in the state, and he's also won multiple CNPA and Association of Alternative Newsmedia awards for his writing and editing. Ruth oversees the Express' arts, music, and culture coverage, affectionately knowns as the "back of the book." In her free time, she freelances and sleeps. Ruth continues to enjoy reading way more than writing.

Darwin Bondgraham, Staff Writer
East Oakland
Darwin is an investigative journalist who covers politics, business, real estate, labor, healthcare, housing, and more for the Express. Prior to working as a reporter, Darwin was an academic, earning a PhD in Sociology from the University of California Santa Barbara.

Gabrielle Canon, Staff Writer
Oakland
Gabrielle is an investigative journalist and culture reporter who covers a wide variety of beats, both locally and nationally. Before coming to the Express, she wrote for Mother Jones, LA Weekly, and Huffington Post, and was a producer for a syndicated news radio show on the Pacifica Network. She also produced an award-winning short documentary on solitary confinement in California prisons and contributes to Uproxx Reports as a producer and on-air host. In her free time, she enjoys whiskey, long backpacking trips, yelling at her favorite sports teams, and talking to strangers — but not necessarily in that order. Brian Krans, News & Investigations Intern
East Oakland
Brian is a first-year student at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. He’s reported on crime, government, health epidemics, and rollerblading (Yes, rollerblading) for more than a decade. Originally from the Midwest where he won state awards for spot news and investigative reporting, he sold nearly everything he owned and moved to the Bay Area in 2009.

Deanna Boutte, Music & Entertainment Intern
San Jose
Deanna is a senior at San Jose State University, earning her degree in English with a concentration in Professional and Technical Writing. She is also a Radio Personality and DJ at KSJS 90.5 FM, where she currently holds the position as Urban Music Director. Alice Feller, News & Investigations Intern
Berkeley
Alice is a journalism student at Laney College, where she is managing editor of the award-winning Laney Tower. For the past year, she has written about homelessness, immigration and health care. Recently, she completed a four-part series on the Peralta College administration. She has a special interest in public health, and is a member of the Berkeley Homeless Commission. In her spare time she enjoys hiking, watching movies, and listening to music. She lives with her husband and daughter in Berkeley.

Suhauna Hussain, News & Investigations Intern
Suhauna is a UC Berkeley junior studying Political Economy. She previously worked as an editor, news reporter and layout designer at The Daily Californian. As an editor, Suhauna notably guided reporting on high profile sexual harassment cases, UC Berkeley's plan to tackle its structural deficit and events leading up to Chancellor Nicholas Dirks' resignation.

Maggie Lam, Music & Entertainment Intern
Maggie is a third year undergrad at UC Berkeley, pursuing a double major in Cognitive Science and Rhetoric. She is a writer and contributor at Sukeban magazine, a feminist fashion collective based in London. Her favorite pastimes are listening to ambient electronic music, writing in her journal, and going on night hikes in the Berkeley hills.

Emma Courtright, News & Investigations Intern
In May, Emma will graduate with her BA in English and Media Studies from UC Berkeley. She spent the fall 2016 semester in Washington, D.C., where she interned with Voice of America. At VOA, she assisted with both in-studio and on-site news production, which broadcasted primarily in Africa. Emma enjoys camping in the Sierras, watching Jeopardy with her parents, and taking pictures of her roommate's cat.

Hayden is a Bay Area native and current student at Laney College. He plans to transfer and earn a BA in English, with a focus on Multicultural Literature, and Minor in Spanish. He shoots for the Laney Tower.
