.Shiftiest Driving Maneuver

The Gateway Exit Snake

Driving up Highway 24 to the Caldecott Tunnel on a hot day can be a real bummer, especially if traffic is backed down the hill and your temperature gauge is teetering dangerously close to the red zone. You can see the tunnel’s light, dammit, and you know once you get there it’s smooth sailing to Oakland, baby. But how to get there without overheating in more ways than one? Listen up, folks, because we’re only gonna say it once: Get off at the Gateway exit, about three miles before the tunnel. The road runs parallel to the gridlocked freeway, so you’ll zoom past a wall of angered faces and white knuckles — but don’t look them in the eye. The guilt isn’t worth it! At the stop sign, turn left and follow the road to get back onto 24. It’ll drop you off at the tunnel’s entrance with a cool engine to boot.
