Genius Kids

When Asian-born adults have kids here in the States, they’re often surprised to learn how casual American daycare centers and preschools are. Even those that are considered structured, such as Montessori schools, allow kids far more playtime than the highly disciplined learning environments they’re often used to back home. That’s why lots of Asian-American parents have turned to Genius Kids of Fremont, which specializes in returning kids to the rigorous path of early childhood academics. A recent visit found children as young as two and a half reading aloud in front of their classmates. “We all want to be smart and genius kids, and we all want to read, right?” owner Rennu Dhillon told the thirty or so two- and three-year-olds assembled there. Dhillon, who was born and raised in Kenya and completed her academic career through a doctorate in England, owns and operates Genius Kids with her husband Gill. She considers her school a hybrid — definitely more demanding than traditional American preschools, but not as pressurized as those in India, where some kids are placed on a very early track to become doctors, lawyers, and software engineers.
