The Dead Fish

This restaurant-cum-bar on the west side of the charming town of Crockett overlooks the Carquinez Strait, where imbibers can not only scope out barges and container ships, but also gaze at the recently opened Al Zampa Memorial Bridge, the first large-scale suspension bridge to be built in the US since the Verrazano-Narrows was bolted together back in 1964. The view is pretty much stupendous, with views of three counties — Contra Costa, Solano, and Sonoma — the strait, the Maritime Academy across the way, the former military base at Mare Island, and the north end of the bay. But the jewel of the view, especially at night, is the bridge. While slurping on your Drink Like a Fish cocktail (really, that’s what the menu says), you can think about the amazing resiliency of the bridge’s namesake, who fell from the Golden Gate Bridge during its construction in 1936 and survived to build six more bridges in the Bay Area after founding the “Halfway to Hell” club, made up of other bridge-fall survivors.
