Some Kinda ...

Though a lot of contemporary neo-soul has somehow meandered into the mainstream (after all, even Goapele gets airplay nationwide), it’s still surprising that an artist like Detroit’s Dwele could cross over, something the 27-year-old singer-songwriter appears poised to do. Much like Goapele, what Dwele lacks in range, he makes up for in consistency, and his sophomore effort, Some Kinda … , is a gem. Having made a name for himself by pairing with offbeat rap artists like Slum Village and Bahamadia, Dwele could become the next Maxwell: a highly successful though somewhat limited artist with a pristine voice and exquisite production. Dwele’s music is one part classic R&B and two parts contemporary soul, with a pinch of hip-hop and jazz thrown in for flavor. “Flapjacks,” a celebration of either asses or tits (and maybe both), is about as raunchy as it gets with him; “Lay It Down” is a slightly more elegant call for a lady to drop her inhibitions and join him for the night. These two songs alone make the album worth buying.
