To sweat in Davis

SAT 9/17

Endurance athletes, so the legend goes, flock to the university town of Davis for its world-class sports training environment as well as for events like this Saturday’s Californiaman Triathlon and CaliMan Triathlon. The double header consists of two separate events on the same day. In the more rigorous Californiaman, some 1,000 athletes swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and then run a 26.2-mile marathon. Whew. For those who prefer to have a little less iron in their diet, the Caliman adds up to “Californiaman Lite,” with a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike course, and a 13.1-mile run. Spectators are welcome, too, with a festival of live music, food, and drink, plus shuttles to the race course. The race day begins before dawn, with last call for spectators at 6 a.m. Phone the Yolo County Visitors Bureau at 1-877-713-2847 for more details. — Kelly Vance

Get Real

Longer, harder, better

You’ve gone out for a few of On Your Mark Events’ Tri-for-Fun competitions, now it’s time to do it for real. Grizzled triathletes join up-and-coming ones — as many as 40 percent first-timers in the field — for this Sunday’s Tri-for-Real in Pleasanton. Shadow Cliffs Regional Park, with its lake, gentle hills, and flat, paved roads, is the setting for the seven-hundred-yard swim in a warm, clean lake; the eighteen-mile looped-course bike race; and a four-mile run along a rolling fire trail. You must bring an ANSI-approved bike helmet and swim cap. Carved soapstone trophies go to the top male and female finishers, with medals three deep in eleven different age classes. Entry fees are $45 individual, $125 relay team. There is a thousand-participant maximum for each triathlon, so register ASAP at OnYourMarkEvents.com. Races at 7 a.m. sharp at Shadow Cliffs, 2500 Stanley Blvd., Pleasanton. — Kelly Vance

Run for the Groceries

Autumn in coastal California is the real summertime, the best time of year for outdoor sports beneath the big red sun. It’s also school time, and underfunded students need all the help they get. That’s why East Bay families are “bringing home the groceries” this Saturday at the tenth annual Back to School Scholarship Run, a benefit for college students whose parents work in the California food industry. Check-in and race-day registration at Pleasanton’s Shadow Cliffs Park opens at 7 a.m., and there are events for men, women, and kids, including 10K and 5K runs, a 5K walk, and a Children’s Mile. For the $30 race-day entry fee, each contestant receives a mess o’ goodies. For more info, call 209-795-7832. — Kelly Vance
